Strategy 10:
Become the Better You
This week’s strategy invites us to shift from self-reflection to self-reinvention. Strategy 10: Become the Better You asks, “Who are you becoming and how is that person different from the one who committed the crime?” It’s a call to action to build a life that aligns with integrity, maturity, and service to others.
Strategy 10 – Become the Better You is about transformation that goes beyond stopping harmful behavior. It calls for an intentional rebuilding of one’s identity based on values like honesty, empathy, and responsibility. This strategy emphasizes that the Board wants to see evidence of a new way of living, not just avoiding the old way, but actively cultivating a better one. Becoming the better you means showing the panel that you’re not just rehabilitated—you’re restored.
Notes
This strategy focuses on embodiment: What does the “better version” of you actually look like day to day? The Board is listening for specific, observable shifts in behavior, relationships, and self-concept. Change must be proactive, not just what you’ve stopped doing, but who you now choose to be. This includes how you handle conflict, accountability, and purpose. Reentry plans should reflect this new version of yourself.
Recap & Takeaways
Strategy 10 is about becoming—not just explaining your growth. The panel isn’t just evaluating your insight; they’re assessing who you’ve become through your choices. The “better you” is not theoretical, it shows up in language, demeanor, parole plans, and your daily conduct. This strategy reminds us that suitability is not a destination, but a lived expression of personal transformation.
